Backdoors & Breaches

Incident Response Training Simulation

GAME OVERVIEW

Backdoors & Breaches is a cooperative incident response simulation where you work as a security team to detect and uncover a 4-stage cyberattack chain.

The attacker has already compromised your network through four stages: Initial Compromise, Pivot & Escalate, Persistence, and C2 & Exfiltration. Each stage is represented by a hidden attack card that you must uncover before time runs out.

On each turn, select a security procedure and roll a D20 die. A total of 11 or higher is a success. If your chosen procedure detects one of the hidden attack cards, it's revealed. Uncover all four to win.

Watch out for Inject events — triggered by natural 1s, natural 20s, or three consecutive failures. These can help or hinder your investigation with bonuses, penalties, procedure lockouts, or surprise reveals.

INSPIRATION

This digital version is inspired by the original Backdoors & Breaches tabletop card game created by Black Hills Information Security and Active Countermeasures.

The physical game is an excellent tool for training incident response teams and building security awareness. This digital adaptation brings it to the browser with animated dice, sound effects, and multiplayer support.

MULTIPLAYER

Play with 2-5 players in cooperative multiplayer mode. One player creates a room and shares the 6-character room code with teammates.

  • Incident Commander (IC): Rotates each turn. The IC selects which procedure to use and rolls the dice.
  • Voting: Non-IC players can vote on which procedure they think should be used. The IC sees the vote tally.
  • Chat: Communicate with your team using the built-in chat panel.
  • Quick Match: Jump into a random public room or create one automatically.
